The 86th Academy Awards are this Sunday, March 2. The live broadcast on ABC begins at 7 p.m. Eastern. We are hosting a small Oscar Party, which is really not much more than a group of “movie friends” coming over to watch the show over snacks until most folks get too tired and have to go home before the announcement of Best Picture.
There are nine nominees for Best Picture this year:
- American Hustle
- Captain Phillips
- Dallas Buyers Club
- 12 Years a Slave
- The Wolf of Wall Street
The buzz is that Best Picture is a three-way race between American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave. I think 12 Years a Slave will win Best Picture although honestly, I would only give it a B+. While the subject was of course very powerful and Chiwetel Ejiofor turned in an amazing performance, I thought the movie overall was a bit uneven in terms of pacing and character development.
Gravity will probably get recognized in the form of a Best Director award for Alfonso Cuarón. In the acting categories, my money is on Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) in leading roles and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) in supporting roles.
Still, many of the races are wide open. And while I think there are a lot of excellent individual performances, I’d give this year’s overall movies a “B.”
What nominees have you seen and what did you think?
